Shenshan Lighthuse establish in 1871 is located on the north side of the Yangtze River entrance, about 12 nautical miles to the southeast of the east beach of the Chongming Island. The lighthouse is an important aid to navigation for vessels to locate its position, turn its course and avoid the Jigu reef. A VTS repeater station was installed in October 2005 and AIS base station was installed in January 2006 at the same site.
