Huaniao Island has another name as North Saddle Island because two mountain peaks on Huaniao Island look like a saddle in shape while being seen from south to north. Thus Huaniaoshan Lighthouse is also called Beiandao Lighthouse. Huaniaoshan Lighthouse, with a history of more than 100 years, was originally established in 1870 and rebuilt in 1910. The lighthouse is equipped with a 1.84-meter-diameter bullseye lens and painted with alternate black and white bands. Combined with visual, audible, radio aids and an AIS base station, it is a multifunctional aid to navigation, which was bestowed as the No.1 Lighthouse of Far East in history. Nowadays, it is an major aid to navigation in both southeast China and southeast Asia, guiding ships entering Yangtze River estuary via the Pacific Ocean. It is also an important aid for large and medium-size ships on the key routes in southeast China. In June 1988, the lighthouse became a historical relic in Zhoushan city, Zhejiang province. In August 1997, it was declared a provincial historical relic. In October 1997, it was chosen as a national cultural heritage by the State Council of the People's Republic of China. In May 2002, it was listed in the Chinese historical lighthouse stamps issued by China State Post Bureau.
